This year students in the ELL class are enjoying English practice with volunteers at a monthly conversation class. Beginning in February all international students attending GISS will have the opportunity to meet the volunteers during the preceding lunch hour for one-on-one help with any school work they have.

GISS Peer Counsellors shared their experience at a focus group meeting (webinar #17) available here
February 20th: BC Lions Football Players led a “Be More Than a Bystander – Break the Silence on Violence Against Women” assembly at school today and the GISS Peer Counsellors were chosen to be their focus group, so we had another hour with them talking about ways in which peers can set the example for peers in their consideration of others.

- Learn to facilitate multi-generational writing groups.
Facilitators’ training starts in September. 18 community members ranging in age from 14 to 70 will meet for 8 workshops during the Fall followed by a 4 week supervised practicum in the Spring.
The project is a collaboration between Connecting Generations and the Salt Spring Arts Council and funded by the B.C. Arts Council’s Arts-Based Community Development program.
The first Wellness Summit took place at GISS on Thursday February 16th. 47 facilitators offered 37 different workshops on topics ranging from Mindfulness and Depression to Collage, Comedy, Music and Painting , from “What is Happiness?” to Running, Aikido and Dance. The summit was organized by Leadership students for all students attending GISS under the guidance of Leadership teacher Nikita Pardiwala and with the support of the Connecting Generations program.
